A World of Poverty: The Face of Poverty in America & Abroad

This is an event that many of you may find worth in checking out:

A World of Poverty: The Face of Poverty in America & Abroad
    Thursday, March 4th | 8pm
Silk Auditorium in Mitchell Hall – Malone University

Many of us live lives of moderate wealth and safety. But there is a world out there of oppressive and uncontrollable poverty. It is down the street, across the continent, and on the other side of the globe. Many of these issues are not as easy to fix as some may believe, and often times are a result of greed, oppressive systems, and lack of available resources.

Come again to the Silk Room and learn about the lesser known world of poverty. In America it is common to think that poverty is only a product of laziness and addiction. While this plays a role in some respects, in developed countries there are many causes to poverty. In America specifically, the faces of poverty these days can even be working family members often called “the working poor.” In underdeveloped countries, the system is even more oppressive and difficult to escape with, for example, the growth of irresponsible and exploitative globalization. Join us as we dive into complex economic structures and the difficult world of poverty here in America and around the world.

A panel of speakers representing the diverse world of poverty will be here to help us wrestle with the tough realities. Coming from Refuge of Hope (a local serving partner of LoveCanton) is Scott Schnyders who is shelter manager, who brings a passion for helping the poor in Canton and information on poverty in America. Also, bringing to us his knowledge of the systemic causes of poverty and cultural analysis is Dr. Malcolm Gold, professor of Sociology in Malone University’s Social Sciences Department. Lastly, Jason Duff, a young entrepreneur from Ohio who speaks nationally on microfinance, will bring information on global poverty and a revolutionary tool for fixing it called microfinancing.
